Osage shorty
« on: July 05, 2012, 08:15:00 PM »
Here is my first try at a short bow.  It is 49 1/2" long and 50# @ 24".  It is one of the short pieces from the monster osage tree.  I used 2 full layers and one strip down the center.  The sinew is from an elk that I got from Pearl Drums.  I covered the sinew up with a roadkill blacksnake belly skin.  This is the first time I have tried that.  I spent a lot of time scraping it and removing the scales after it dried.  I had to remove them one at a time using a razor blade to lift them free of the skin.  The belly skin is fairly thick and I think it would add a small bit of protection to the back of a bow.  The handle wrap is from a roadkill beaver, also a first.  I burnished the bow with a piece of deer antler and finished it up with tru-oil.  The bow weighed a little over 12 oz  before finishing.

That funny right there.

cool looking bow!
When skins give me trouble with scales I use a rubber pencil eraser to rub them off.it works great and is faster than pulling them of one at a time.

Great Tyler job too.

That's a nice looking bow.  If I ever get enough time, I'd like to coax a self-bow out of osage.

I want to build one just like yours.  Very nice bow!

Don't worry Scrub.  I'm  right there with you.  I'm 64" on a good day.  We don't have to bend over so far to drag out our deer.

Thanks guys.
I love the sound of a tall guys head banging off of an overhang.  Black Mockingbirds melon makes a nice thud when bounced off the roof at the Twin Oaks bow shop.    :biglaugh:

That is a sweet looking bow. When I skinned 2 rat snakes this year I wondered if anyone had tried the belly skin. Now I may give it a whirl some time.
