split bamboo backing
« on: August 06, 2012, 03:34:00 PM »
Hi all!
Got my beautiful bambo backed highly reflexed/deflexed longbow cracked today!
Sad story but idiotic of course.
Now I need to fix it. How! Strip is 1/3 inch wide and 3 inches long on upper back of limb.
Godo advice welcome.
Best regards Joel

You could glue(hide glue, carpenters glue or super glue) the strip back down and add a wrap at the beginning of the splinter. Sinew would be the best wrap material but silk thread or other thin, strong thread will also work. After you wrap, soak the wrap with super glue or other glue and let it all cure for a few days. Your bow will probably be a little stiff in the area where it is wrapped.
Pictures would help with the diagnosis.

What many do is like Pat said and then add,a similar wrap in the same area on the other limb.
You can color them with a marker and make it look like it was ment to be that way.

Thanks a lot for your advice. Is hide glue more flexible than super glue? Would it allow the limb to bend better? Where can I find hide glue? Pretty sure it will be hard to come around here in Sweden....
I will try to post a pic here in short.
For how long in general, do you let it rest before using the bow again-after gluing operation?
