shelf?
« on: August 18, 2012, 02:24:00 PM »
I am building my 3rd board bow.  It is red oak with pretty good grain.  I want to cut a small arrow shelf into the handle.  Is it recommended or not?  I don't like shooting off of my knuckle.  How wide should the shelf be?  thanks  <>< del

It depends on how thick you are at the handle. If your handle bends at all, I wouldn't try it. You can use the golf tee trick, though. Split a golf tee down the middle and cut it half in two and glue it to the side where you want your shelf. It works great! You can see how to do that here.

It will not bend in the handle I don't think.  I like the golf tee trick.  I have put a small deer antler on the side of the riser as well to work as a shelf.  <>< del

I make rests like Roy.  I dish out the area and then build up a rest from layers of leather and superglue.

I don't cut into the side of the bow, I just make rests from leather and glue them on.

I've made rests from deer antler, wood, and leather.  The leather, as Roy suggests, is the way to go.

Here is what I. I don't cut one in, rather just leave enough wood there food a shelf and blend it into the grip. It's not much, just a bit for locating.

Now DVS, don't be exaggerating, seems I am sitting here looking at a mighty fine bow that doesn't have a shelf.    ;)

I make mine like Roy , but use heavy leather shaped with a dremmel tool because I   had golf tees break; the leather is much more durable.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I'd rather run a wood screw into the side of the bow, than make a dumb shelf like dvs:)

Don't forget the pilot hole Roy, don't want that plywood stuff you use to split.
