Forged Draw Knife
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:05:00 PM »
This is my first post on this section of the forum. Robin Severe (RoughCountry) suggested I post it. He and I have been talking for some time about the tools he and his father made and he uses now. Draw knives are something he and I are interested in since he uses one often and I do occasionally, but love making things. It turns out that the education department where I work was needing some draw knives so I thought I'd try it. This picture is of one that I forged from a spring drop. It started off 3/8 thick X 2 1/2 inch X 2 1/2. So it was a square 3/8 inch thick. It was fun forging it  :)  . I'm fortunate to have access to some historically correct tools that are made for forging such items.

I and a co worker (Andy) should conspire to get it finished tomorrow. He'll turn the handles and I'll do the hot work. I have it heat treated and the handles forged down now and should get some more cell phone shots of it as we go. It is an interesting project and I thought you might want to see.

That is great Lin. I posted on the knife forum awhile ago about draw knives and steel. Robin was kind enough to show me his tools and to tell me a little about them and the use of them.
I would still like to have a hand made draw knife for my bow making, but for now I still use Grand Dad's, And that is always fine with me.
I really look forward to seeing this one finished. It looks great so far. Thank you.

Thanks guys. We are working on it again this morning.
Look close and you can see the burr on the edge. This will be stoned off after the handles are installed.

Here's Andy turning the handles. He made that lathe, btw. This guy is a real craftsman.

Although the holes are drilled and egg shaped, they still needed to be seated so I forged a piece of rod to closely match the shape of the handle tangs and burned the shape in.

Very cool Lin, I'm glad you posted it here. I knew guys that used a drawknife would love seeing it.
In the pictures I can tell it's very well built and made to last a couple lifetimes.

Very well done Lin, glad we still have Masters like you in this great Country.
