All wood kids bow
« on: October 31, 2012, 10:14:00 AM »
I recently picked up an all wood kids bow. It is about 48" in length and about 20# in draw. It has a handle that was laminated to it but has come off. It also has quite a bit of string follow.

I would like to reduce the string follow, increase the weight a bit (maybe to about 30#) and re-attach the handle. I will post photos later today.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff

You could back it with a thin piece of hickory or something similar and induce reflex upon glue-up, that should kill two birds with one stone... add weight and reduce string follow.

When you reattach the handle piece, be sure to prep the gluing surfaces well. Get all the old glue off and get down to new wood. Whether you finish the gluing surfaces coarse or smooth depends on which glue you decide to use.

For handle pieces, I like to prep with a toothing plane blade and use an epoxy with gap filling properties.

Thanks for the advice. I haven't found the time to get the photos posted yet.

I like the idea of the thin piece of hickory. What thickness should I look for?
