Feather string silencer...?
« on: November 02, 2012, 01:43:00 AM »
Howdy,

I'm new to the world of archery and recently received my first recurve from a friend. It is a Browning Nomad Stalker, 58", 53#. The string does not have silencers.
My question is can I make one out of feathers (my chickens feathers)? I looked at videos online but no one made one from feathers.

Thanks
Kadjain

Welcome to the new world.  I'm gonna say, no.  Perhaps as a field expedient and for temporary purposes you could tie some feathers on the string and help with vibration.
But generally speaking I don't think chicken type feathers are robust enough to handle the constant shock from shooting.
You could always try.  Group a bunch together and tie them on and see how they work.  It sure won't hurt.

String silencers aren't very expensive, less than $10.00. You could make your own from yarn bought from a local store, heck even from gum bands. I don't think the feathers will do the job or hold up to many shots.

If ya go with yarn make sure it is acrylic or wool.

I made some from a bag of rubberbands I bought for $.57, I still have enough for about 20 more bows.

Chris,
I just grab a bunch of yarn and tie it on real tight with dental floss. Take a bunch about 4" long and lay them lengthwise along the string. I then tie them real tight with dental floss and put a dab of superglue on the knot. Works just fine and you can get real creative with colours, especially if you know anyone who knits.
Good luck and welcome to the Gang.
