goobersan,
I seal the pores of the wood using one of the longer set time (30-45 minute) two part epoxys. Like the ones that come from the local hardware store.
I cut the epoxy with acetone. Four parts acetone to one part epoxy. Most refer to it as the Massey Finish.
I apply a coat with a clean rag (old Tee shirts). The let it dry over night. If I can get to another coat in 8-12 hours I do so. If not I lightly sand with 320-400 grit paper (not emery cloth), wipe clean and then apply another coat.
It take several coats to fill the pores in some woods. Once you have the pores full, your spray finish will look smooth as glass. My final spray finish is Fullerplast.
To me there is nothing less appealing to me than to look at a nice bow with great wood combos, excellent craftsmanship and see unfilled pores in the finish. To me it's like rebuilding a 66 Mustang and painting it with a brush.
