Sealing Riser Wood.

Just received a large Cocobolo Riser block and it appears one end is not sealed. Will not be using the block for a while and was wondering what I should seal the end with to prevent cracks/checking?

I keep a spray can of shellac and spray a couple of coats on the ends to seal them up.
