iron wood long bow repair?
« on: January 18, 2013, 10:11:00 PM »
I built a iron wood long bow over a year ago. After shooting it a while I noticed I got a splinter on the edge on the back. And I'm gonna super glue it back down and was thinking about sanding it down and applying some sort of backing. I have some sineu but not enough and then thought about applying a exotic wood veneer. What do you guys think? Will a veneer help with support of the limbs and keep them from splintering again?

Thanks guys I may have enough sineu. Should use titebond on the sineu or super glue?

On sinew I'd use the TB. Probable use TB 3 on thread also.
Another trick is If you want it smooth is to mix some fine sawdust with glue after and use,it to smooth it out.

I like the idea of using saw dust I have a few peices of iron wood left I will cut it up and gather the dust from it because I think it will blend in being that it is so dark.

Another thought is artificial sinew comes on a roll like 1/8 wide thread, does a neat job of wrapping anything. Or if you have real sinew that works too. And like VB said any serving thread will do the job. You could do a wrap on the other limb to match your first patch job and make it look like you wanted it that way.

Rawhide and any nylon thread will work as will Dacron and serving thread. Super glue the splinter down and then lay down some epoxy. Wrap with thread and coat with epoxy. Sinew will work too. Jawge
