Have any of you guys done the turkey slam?
« on: February 07, 2007, 12:16:00 PM »
Well Its almost spring and I started thinking About turkeys!  I was wondering if any of you guys got the 4 for the slam (not talking the 6 YET) and if so what states did you get them all out of.  So far my spring will be here in CO then to OK and maybe a flight to Florida if I get my Rio and Miriam.  Anyway just seeing who did it and whose ready to chase the big birds of spring!!!!

Joey Buchanan of MS is after it.  He was here about 3 weeks ago looking for someone to go along on the Mexico Goulds trip with their group.

I plan to complete one.Im looking at rios or merriams in 2008 or maybe even both.Id like an oscelated thrown in for a royal slam.I only have easterns so far but this is a good avenue for trading hunts for the other birds.Goulds and oscelated seems like true adventure hunting.

I've got 3 of the 4, all taken here in Nebraska.
if I ever get to Florida I'll have to try for a oscelated.
No matter what type of bow is shot, we're all archers.

I have 3 of the 4 , Osceola near Melbourne, FL, Easterns in GA, Merriams in SD, still have to get a Rio, but hope to do that soon.  Would really like to get all 4 in the same year and will look at doing that soon.  Got 2 on video and need to get another Osceola and the Rio to have them all videoed.  I know Fred Eichler has all 4, I filmed him shooting his Eastern, the last one he needed, but he gets alot of birds every year, lucky dog!   Mark

I got my eastern so will see what happens lol I was also thinking of trying to do it in one year.  The only one that sucks for me is the Osceola thats a plane ride for that one lol.  I also here they are one of the harder ones to get?

I used to hunt birds alot and managed to get 2 osceolas on public land in FL. my 1st time down their. Also went to Nebraska and got a merriams in late season.Lived in the midwest all my life so the eastern was no biggy.I thought about a Rio to complete the slam but my priorties have changed a bit and I am doin other things.Maybe someday.logistically the Fl. bird is harder to get since they only have em in FL.They can be tougher to get as well IMO especially on public.Had  some hard hunts their a few years.I am definatly chasin easterns in a few states this season and broke out the calls yesterday to get tuned up a  bit.Good luck to ya!

I thought a slam was all 4 in the same year. Heck, I'd be happy to have enough turkeys to hunt that I could take one with a longbow!

Thanks Curt, we had a good time doing that, as we always do when Fred is around.  Will be chasing them again this April with him here in Ga after I get him a alligator and some stingrays in FL.  I shot my bird the morning before Fred got his, but I just missed getting the impact on camera since the bird was moving, but it was still sweet!  Mine was bigger, guess that's why he did not use it!! LOL  9 1/2in beard!  Holler if you ever get down here, got some new land with turkeys and hogs on it.  Mark
