Refinishing a bow riser??
« on: January 28, 2013, 04:41:00 PM »
I am new to this whole traditional thing. If somebody wanted to refinish a bow riser is it as simple as refinishing anything else? Do you simply sand it down and then finish it? What is the best finish to use? Thanks in advance folks.

Do you know what woods the riser is made of? If it is made of a "oily" wood like Cocobolo or Bocote then a spray finish like Spar Urethane or tru oil wipe on cannot be used with out "sealing" the riser first.

Well, I don't have the bow yet. I have been seeing some cheap older bows for sale and was thinking about picking one and refinishing it.

Other than having exotic oily woods then the answer is yes it is just like refinishing any other wood project.

Spray on poly and such is the easy way.
