ea 40 smooth on prep sand
« on: January 28, 2013, 08:02:00 PM »
Hi all. For those using smooth on for bow glue. Have never used it just Urac.
I use sharp saw blade scrape scratches for glue surface on the Urac. Is that the same for smooth on or is it ok to go with sandpaper surface?  If so what grit. Thanks for tips on Smooth on use.

I use 60 or 80 grit sandpaper. I know some who use 100 grit.

I build glass bows. The glass comes sanded to 80 grit. All my lams are 60 grit and have had no failures. Some use more course on the wood. I dont think the hacksaw blade will hurt you.

Would like to go to sandpaper I think.  Sometimes I feel like the saw blade thing is such a waste and very time consuming. easy to mess up the edges with the hacksaw blade also.

I actually grind my lams and riser face with 40 grit! I was in a hurry one day and tried a 24 grit belt, man didn't that puppy move some fibers! Too harsh though.

if you make the surfaces too rough and/or random--it WILL show in your glue lines

thanks for input. for sure I am going to kick the hacksaw blade habit. glue will be here in a day or two so going to get some sanded only parts together for a glue up. Sounds like almost any grit from 100 to 40 will work. sounds good.
