BBO repair thread...Finished turkey bow (Hit the mark!)
« on: January 29, 2013, 02:16:00 PM »
Hey guys-
So today I started on a 60 ttt BBO that I had major problems with. The tiller was way off and not to mention that the boo split in six different spots from being left in the garage during the cold (my bad). I forgot that it was out there and when I went to look and bring it in. Over night it CRACKED CRACKED CRACKED.

I spent the day in the garage removing the bamboo from the osage. I got the osage even throughout each limb to around 1/4 inch. My plan which I have been talking to the Ol MIGHTY ROY!!! is to add some osage lams that I got from Guru Kenny onto the osage and then add a new piece of boo.

Here is the osage and handle area all cleaned up.

So my next plan of attack is to glue on and slice the osage lams... Get that shaped out some and then add the new piece of boo. I thought this because the belly osage is already shaped. Adding a new lam and then a new shaped piece of boo onto them would be a difficult challenge to make sure everything is lined up.

What are your guys thoughts on this plan of attack???

I hope to have this bow fixed and ready for May turkey season. Thanks for the look guys!!

Justin

Justin-that will work just fine.It would not be that hard to line up all three peices to glue them all at once.Shape them out,Glue them up and put clamps and blocks on the sides to keep them lined up then put it in your form and clamp it down.I do trilams like that all the time.Good luck and post your progress---Joe

I would be sure to glue in about 3" of reflex with those osage slats.

Thanks guys.. I never thought of cutting them all out and lining them up. I will have to give that a shot... I plan on gluing up about 3.5 inches of reflex in them!!!

Thanks guys... Just waiting on the glue to arrive and then we will be clamping them together!!!

This bow had about an inch of reflex in it before I took the boo off. I am suprised on how much the limbs dropped. I can deffinately see how the bamboo holds the reflex into the wood. Kinda cool to see though first hand!

It's the glue joint that holds the reflex, Justin. Just glue her back together with the reflex in the form. And go slow and easy.

My #1 bow is a similar fix. Put on a little thicker piece of bamboo than I usually do and had to drop a bit of poundage after glue up.

I can vouch for a full length lam of walnut. My favorite bow has one. Lively bow!

Good idea on the walnut and if I had some I would swap that in instead of the osage lam. Since I don't lol... orange it is. I got the bamboo thinned down well but want to run over it some more so that i can make sure it is completely uniform. It is real close right now but I think that I can do better work with just another day on it. We shall see... It is killing me because I am just waiting on my glue to show up in the mail before I continue working on this.

Don't forget to cook or heat up the boo to remove moisture.
When they come in it is,usually very high in moisture content.

Well tomorrow will be the day that I get this bow into glue up. My Unibond 800 finally came in. My boo is preped and ready. Tomorrow I will cut the new lam to bow shap and then put it all together with some tape then start clamping her up. I will post some pictures tomorrow before and after the glue up....

Wish me luck!!!

Well it is all clamped up. I took my time lining everything up. The lam and bamboo is slightly wider anyways so I will be able to thin it down to the belly and handle. There is 3.5 inches of reflex hoping to keep around 3 or 2.5 inches.

The Unibond 800 glue works just like Urac which is awesome but it definately sets up a whole lot quicker. It took me some time to clamp everything up and I could tell I needed to work quicker. Now the directions say that the lowest heat being 70 deg will cure in 3 hours. I don't doubt it but I am going to let it rest now at least 10 hours and then see what the glue on the sides of the bow look like.

Here is a picture of the dry run....

All clamped up in the basement now....

It is definately going to be thicker than needed so some weight will need to be taken out but I think that I can get it back up to around 50#..

We shall see in the next couple days!!!!

Wish my glue-ups were that neat. I end up with glue all over every thing!
Looks good, Justin.

I didn't even wrap this bow with plastic this time because of the three pieces I would need to move and get em all lined up.

Some old fart gives great advice once before Roy. Guess I paid attention when he speaks... Athough he is goofy as hell looking and a weakling.

Can you believe he has this so call thumpin list but complains that 55# is TOO MUCH FOR MY $*%!!!

LOL....HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!
