Anyone use Dragon Plate carbon?
« on: January 31, 2013, 07:05:00 PM »
Looking for some carbon to back a longbow with.Saw the Dragon Plate website, and there carbon weave looked interesting. Just wondering if anyone has used it. I ordered a piece to try,so I'll be the guinea pig unless someone else has tried it.

I've seen it and have been going to order some to try but haven't got around to it. I like the looks of it. Let us know how it works in a bow.

Got the carbon yesterday from Dragon Plate. At first glance it feels kinda wimpy, like not much springback. But then again so did the carbon Uni from Gordon.

I have to wait for lams before gluing up a bow,but I'll give it a shot and let you all know how it turns out.

Don't know how to post pics, but if you go to the website dragonplate.com,and click on carbon sheets, there are good closeups.

I used the .025 sheet with .020 blk glass under it.
Seemed a little faster and harsher on the shot, but I think carbon does that. The finished side has a film of .005 epoxy resin,be careful to not sand thru it and cut the carbon fibers.Hope this might help you in building your bow.

Wonder what it would do to the carbon if you put it under say .020 clear glass?

Would doing it glass over carbon make the carbon less effective?

I like the looks of the carbon. Make for a sweet look.

Troy, Everything I've read about carbon suggests that putting it under glass or anything else will lessen the effectiveness.Should be on the back by itself.

One other thing I used a dremel tool with a carbide disk on a scrape piece of plywood with a wood fence to cut.

Another good thing to do is tape the nozzle of a shop vac on the dremel and wear a dust mask of some sort. That should do it.

I think that most of this issues people had with carbon being susceptible to breakage was due to it being uni directional like the old pultruded carbon shafts. Dragon plate and other weave type carbon wouldn't have that weakness. I wouldn't be afraid to put it on the outside by itself.
