A bow for Katt
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:11:00 AM »
About a year ago WildKatt, a member of PA asked if I would like to trade bows with him. After admireing Katt's bows for a few years I knew I wanted one. I told him I was busy with 2 bow trades(last year, PA and TG)so I didn't know when I could get to it.
A short time late a very cool 51" osage bow with flipped tips, snake skin backing and horse tail tassle showed up at my house from Katt. I contacted him to reaffirm that it would be a while before I could get to a bow for him but Katt said when I got to it was soon enough.
After a long dry period for me I finally got back in the shop. This was the second stave I developed since getting back. Since it was a narrow stave I decided on a "lil ELB" style bow; sort of a short Pope or Young style bow. The finished bow will be 61"t/t,50# to 60#@26". She is  a little over 1" wide and has a deep, rounded belly. I added cow horn tip overlays and packed out the back of the handle with leather today. I'll shape them up tomorrow and do the final tillering. I need to loose about 10# but I need to smooth out the tiller a bit too. Anyway, here she is as of now...

She is shaping up nicely, Pat!!

Thanks guys. I put cow horn tip overlays on and packed out the back of the handle with leather last night. Will shape these up today and get back to tillering. I need to loose about 10# as of now.

Looking good Pat. Which design do you prefer, ELB or flat bow as far as shooting?

Sport, I let the piece of wood determine that. I just start removing wood until it looks and acts like a bow. d;^)

Thanks D.
I shaped the tips today and have the packed out handle somewhat shaped. After a good sanding she is almost where she should be as far as draw weight. I'll start putting arrows through her tomorrow and after 100 or so we'll see where she sits then.
This bow will have a hemp cordage handle wrap and a floppy rest. Haven't decided on other decorations or not yet.

Hey Pat, that looks great.
I am trying the same thing with a narrow piece of hickory. It is about 1 1/2" wide and 62" ttt. I have needed to give it a rounded belly due to the shape of the stave. It is the side split from another full size stave bow. Looking forward to how yours turns out and hoping to get some ideas for mine. Am going down to put it on the caul right now to put some even reflex in it and then flip the tips a little.

Here are a few pics of the finished bow. All that is left is about 50 more shots. She is osage
61 1/2"t/t, 56#@26", cow horn tip overlays, hemp cordage handle wrap set in epoxy and a floppy rest. She shoots hard and fast with only a slight thump and dead quiet.
Since she is going to WildKatt from PA I thought a leopard skin pattern would be appropriate on the back.
