« on: February 26, 2013, 05:36:00 PM »
these are some pics of my red oak long bow. 66" long, 8" paracord wrapped handle, pin nocks, 40# at 24". pretty slow, but the only one to work so far    :D  .

I just finished my first bow. 68" red oak. I put a heavier gauge linen backing (as, from what I have heard so far, red oak needs to be a very good board with little to no run out etc) and it worked great...so far..only shot it 2 times though..the backing sure did seem to increase the odds of it working out without breaking and I am very please with the results..it is 30lbs at 28" draw..do you back yours?
This moment called present seems to me perpetually pleasant

Congratulations on your first success. Just some advice and constructive criticism.

Paracord stretches alot. Buy a dacron string and it will speed things up alot for about $15.

for the next one:
If you make the handle fade into the limbs smoothly, it will be less likely to pop the handle off, and will transition into the bending portion of the limbs nicely. (use 1/2 round rasp for this).

the more narrow the tips, the faster the bow, generally speaking. Shoot for tips less than 1/2" wide, 3/8" or even 1/4" is entirely possible with care.

Search 'tillering gizmo'. make one and use it. The more evenly the limbs bend, (i.e. the better the tiller) the better the bow. It will last longer, shoot faster, smoother, better, safer etc. The tiller looks decent from the pics, but there's always room for improvement.

A clean, even tiller is really the key to a great bow. Its the only way to start pushing the limits on a bow design, making a shorter, more narrow, more reflexed, more recurved, heavier draw, faster bow. Tillering is the real trick in bowyering. The rest is art and imbelishment.

Again,  congratulations onyour first, keep it up. You'll get better every time.

One more thing, read the FAQ images. You need to size them to no more than 640 pixels wide.

Photobucket will do this for you automatically when you upload. I forget how, but google it.

 Cheers.

camoz: no, I didn't back it.

Ben: it was resized, as far as I know. the paracord does stretch a little bit, but not much. I am only using it because strings are expensive, but I want to start making my own strings as well. also, the handle wasn't glued on, and I didn't do a fade because it kept breaking on the fade. do you know any build-alongs on making a string jig?
