Cedars Better Than Carbon
« on: February 27, 2008, 02:25:00 PM »
Curious,
How many of you find that your cedar arrows perform better than carbon? I've been shooting CX150's out of my Black Widow PSA for about two years and have loved the performance. Wood arrows are a mystery to me and I've wanted to keep things as simple as possible as a newcomer to traditional. A few months ago, I purchased some cedar arrows and they sat in the closet because they were "too pretty to shoot". Recently, I've gotten them out and they seem to fly better than the carbons. They are easier to see in flight, and it just feels right to shoot wood arrows. Anyone else experience superior performance from wood and is it normal? Thanks.

Off the top of my head if you find that wood arrows are shooting better for you then carbons, I'd have to say that your carbons are not tuned properly to your bow.  Oh and I am a wood shooter.   All things being equal the nature of wood lends itself to not being as accurate as Carbon.  That doesn't mean you can't learn to drive tacks with wood arrows however.

dunno, I have never shot carbons, but do know that a good well spined woodie is as accurate as any arrow out there.. I really like shootin wood, but switch around between wood and aluminum..

I would agree with robslifts, Just a personal preference. I wouldn't say one is better then the other, just different.

My "crookedest" wood arrow still flys straighter than I can shoot!!!!!

ANYONE can shoot straight with perfectly tuned arrows.....but it takes a real "instinctive" shooter to shoot straight with a bunch of crooked, mismatched wood arrows.
I only shoot WOOD arrows... My kid makes them, fast as I can break them!

The carbons bare shaft a little stiff! But, I've got that corrected recently. It just seems more "natural" if that's a good way to express it, to see that big ole woodie arcing through the air. I guess I am just surprised at the performance of wood. Thanks for everyones input. Also, seems the wood is a little more quiet.

Depends on your definition of better, I suppose.

In my opinion anything other than wood is a faux arrow.

I shoot both and I also like to shoot wood more so than carbon. I just recently made some out of ash and just love to shoot them. I am afraid of breaking nocks on them, they shoot that well. To each is own, as long as you are happy with what you have.  ;)

Shoot straight and have FUN!!

I agree with Bard, if the wood is perfroming better it is because the carbons are not properly tuned. I myself get perfect flight from my bows with both wood and carbon but it takes a little tuning to each. Shawn

I think you got it right when you say they just feel right!  That is my experience with woodies over any other arrow material.   I love shooting my alums out of my LB,  but when I put a set of woodies thru it,  they just feel natural, like a marriage made in heaven.  Of course, I shoot the top premium wood shafts, like Alaskan Yellow Cedars, or Stika Spruce, or just some hand spine/matched cedars!

I have never shot carbon but I have no reason to doubt the claims that they are straighter, more consistant, more durable, easier tunned and out penetrate wood.
  I prefer wood.

A well tuned arrow, wood, carbon, or aluminum, to me are all equally accurate from a bow with no sights. It just takes practice to achieve the best accuracy you can with each.

Right now I like wood!
