3 piece limb attachment?

Hey guys do ya think a 1/2-13 t/in x 1/2 inch long will hold 60lb limbs if I set in phenolic?

Don't see,why not. I'm thinking normal limb bolts are something like 5/16.

Sorry I guess I should have explained a bit better I'm talking about the threaded insert being a 1/2 inch long vs. the usual 7/8 to 1 inch long.

I've thought about that because they are readily available .  Still 5/16" bolt, right?

I just thought being deeper in the wood was much better. Phenolic may help, but I'm still a little concerned with pullout....

Maybe 5/8th, but 1/2 sounds a little on the weak side.

Yep 5/16 bolt, trying to slim down the front of my risers with the rear mount limbs.

So you're talking about a 1/2-13 x 1/2" long threaded insert? which accept a 5/16-20 bolt or somethign like that.

I just got some takedown limb hardware from bingham's and they use 1/2-13 x 3/4" long IIRC.

My guess is its overkill either way.


Here's my take on it:
Longer limb = more stress on bolt
Shorter distance from the bolt to the end of the limb pad = more stress on bolt
(both have to do with leverage)
If you're doing a rear mount limb then this is the distance from the bolt to the base of the limb pad.

Higher draw weight = more stress on bolt

I wouldn't worry unless you were making a really long bow, with a short riser, and high draw weight, and you plan on putting the bolt in a poor location.

I once used the cheap cast metal inserts from HD which are clearly not good quality (they are made for furniture or something) in a takedown bow, maybe 40-45# with 27" limbs. I think these only take a 1/4" bolt. Haven't gotten hit in the noggin yet, not that I recommend this at all, ever.

With that said though, they're only a few bucks for the 1/2-13x3/4 or 7/8 inserts from bingham ....

I have cut the Bingham's inserts in half and screwed them into the limbs and run the bolts through the back of the riser. Been six years since I built a couple like that and though I don't own them I believe they are still shooting ok. I have also used a ton of 1/2" long inserts I buy cheap at Granger. I can get 5 sets for the price of one Bingham's set. Built probably 30 bows that way with no problems at all.
