Another tillering question
« on: March 18, 2013, 08:42:00 PM »
I built a tri lam w/ a hickory belly core, Ipe center, and a bamboo back.  I made the mistake of not thinning the tips of the bamboo down, which were  thicker than the rest of the lam.  As it turned out the belly core is very thin and most of the bending takes place around the fades.  I do not feel comfortable taking anymore wood off the belly.  The bow is 68" long w/ some r/d and around 55lbs at 28".  It actually shoots pretty well.  Will it last?  Will it stand up to alot of shooting?

If it's doing all the bending at the fades it is most likely hinging there. And it could break in time, do you have any pictures?

Not braced.  A friend of mine actually got it yesterday for one of his boys.  I explained my tiller concerns but he liked it so much he took it anyway.  It just would not bend where the deflex start right past midlinb due to the thickness in the boo but the hickory on the belly was getting thin from midlimb to tips and I didn't want to remove any more.  It was very symmetrical side ti side, not sure if I would call it hinged though. Wish I would have took a pic while tillered.

My friends boy is late teens early 20's.  I just don't want him to get whacked in the head.
