Belt/Disc Sander or Edge Sander?
« on: March 19, 2013, 09:24:00 PM »
So I realized if I wanted a decent sanding machine, I'm gonna have to fork over some money.  I'm looking at the grizzly belt/disc combo that goes for 725, and their edge sander, which goes for somewhere around the same price.

So, if you didn't have a sanding machine, which would you get?

Thanks!

Edge sander is my vote too...I would probably go with the Grizzly with the wrap around table and smaller roller as well if I were to do it over again.  (G0512)

Does the GO512 have a spindle sander attachment?

Then it is decided! Rarely do people agree on things, so when they do it makes choices rather obvious haha. Thanks.

I guess I would kill for a good edger- and enough space for one in my shop...
I hope the DIY 12" discsander I´m workin on will bring some advantage anyway- the ones comined to beltsanders I worked with are rather toys or for real small workpieces.
So I totally agree- edgesander is one of the cooles toys for bowyers especially those with a straight frontroller to be used as a spindlesander (oscillation shall even be quite usefull)
I was short before buying a very similar to the one used in following vid- cheap auction on ****- but then I realised how hard it would get to get in my basement so I resigned (It was sold for 300bucks only   "[dntthnk]" )

Dammit just checked out Ridgid oscillating spindle/beltsander after having seen it in too many buildalongs- that would be THE thing for my shop.
But why why why it is not available in my country? I could cry...

Have the GO512, love it, wish the small roller was 2" instead of 2.125" , but thats bein picky!! The 2" on my spindle just fits my bows grip area better!! LOL

I had the Go512 and sold it when I bought a bigger one. Kind of regret selling it as the small idler wheel worked well.

I have since added two more belt sanders and going to build a 3rd. Don't know what I would do with out them.

I have a bunch of sanders, but have no use for a disc and can't see how it would be of any advantage if you had the belt.

Could you have the 2 1/8" idler turned down to 2" by a machine shop? Or have them build one for you?

If budget is an issue, you can get by with a 6" x 48" Belt sander/disc combo from Harbor Freight for around $200. Not as good as an edge sander, and you do not need the disc, but $200?

If budget is not an issue the edge sander will be with you for the rest of your bow building days!

I wish I could buy an edge sander. But I cannot own anythign which does not fit in an apt.

This is basically like asking, belt sander or bigger belt sander since thats basically what an edge sander is. Choice is simple is you have the space/money. With that said, you also at least need a cheap belt sander for small pieces.

Heres a G0512 modified with a profile sander on the big end and I use the small end to shape the grip on the risers and of course grind the limbs on the length of the sander. And of course a zillion other little jobs. Bob
