Today I took my 52 inch long osage stave and roughed out a bow. I figured I would over build it a little right bow and then thin it out if need be later on in the tillering process. It is 1 1/4 wide at the fades all the way to about the 3/4 ish area of the limbs then straight taper to 1/2 inch tips. Here is what it looks like so far....

You can see I have quite a bit of straightening to do so I will take my time there to get it pipe straight. Comments are welcomed! It was fun to get out the draw knife again after a long break from it. Hope to make this one work this time and to get a selfbow under my belt.

I will see what I can come up with.  I don't really have a form for a "kids" bow.  The shortest I can do is 56 inches.  But I think adult bows would draw more money for the charity.   But I'm open to suggestions on draw weight/length.

I taped the bow I have here. 48 tip to tip with a 12 inch riser. Black glass on both sides with one lam of bamboo. The width is about 7/8 at the fades and tapers to 1/2 inch tips with no overlays. The bow is marked 23@25 and both my ten year old and seven year old shoot it fine. The tapers are about four incheslong. The handle is an inch and a half thick and is two 3/4 in pieces of walnut. Hope this helps. Remember if it comes in heavy you can sand off some width and there is no such thing as too light, just needs a younger kid.

I have never done it but if I was going to build a kids bow I would get myself some 2" glass.  Glue up a bow with a single actionboo parallel and about a 8-10" riser with the thinnest glass I could find for back and belly.

Then after glue up just cut it in half on the table saw and square it up in the drum sander.  Take to profile and boom you have two bows from one glue up.

Hope this helps!

I have an osage bow in the works for my daughter, at the moment. 55"ttt. It is still 25# @ 20" which is a bit much for her but she will grow into it. Osage can get pretty thin when trying to get down to these weights. I will see what I have and may end up doing a couple of quivers and arrows to go along with someones bows.

That would be great. I have my second one almost tillered and need to sand it all down and add overlays and probably some snake skins. I'll post pics next week.

Worked on my St. Judes donation bow tonight. 48" tip to tip, Osage backed with Hickory. These short kids bows are tuffer than I thought:) I need to get some weight off it. Gotta thin her down from flares to tips I guess.. Just ruffed in as of now.

That's looking pretty nice Roy. I agree these little bows take almost as much time as the full sized ones. They are easier to sand though. Just keep taking weight off until you can almost pull it and then you will be there.
