Second Board Bow now...
« on: June 09, 2013, 11:13:00 AM »
Here is a link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKxzjrKS8QY&feature=youtube_gdata_player)   to the money shots.  My text to talk didn't work that well so the description makes little sense     :p  .  But the video should be enough.  The poundage came in light ~30-40# but it draws smooth as silk with little handshock on the release.  I left it a little stiff in the tips, but I think it looks good otherwise.  Ill post some pics when its all purdied up.  I followed 4rests build along and had a great time doing it. Would love some criticism people.  I already have three more bows ready to tiller.  I'm officially hooked!!

Tiller looks great on your bow, Aaron.  That's nice work, especially for your first one.  What kind of wood did you use?

I used a red oak board from home depot...did the recurve tips and tip overlays in oak too.  I want to use some different woods in the handle and tips next time.

60# is a tall order for a red oak board bow. You'd probably need to go 1.5-1.75" wide and 68" long to get to 60#.

I had one make 60# at 2.5" wide and 64" long. It did not last long ...

I think the bow would have turned out heavier jad I not made a mistake with the band saw and had to thin both limbs.I already have a couple more I'm working on and can't wait to finish another. This is very addicting, but an addiction that reaps rewards.

Tiller looks good but you got some kinda torque going on with the release.  Bow is completely twisting in your hand.  I've never seen that before.  Does the string bisect the handle?
Take a kid hunting!

I've always shot with a loose grip with my recurves and allowed the bow to do that.  I will probably have to firm up my grip with these bows.  Unfortunately she broke last night.  I will have another one ready for tiller soon though.

I'm suprised it broke. Tiller looked pretty good to me.

Any photos of the break?

Second  Board Bow
Here's the second attempt at a board bow.  Its one I had started awhile ago but am just finishing up now. In still need to finish the tips and fine tune the tiller but I think its close.  I will try and get a better video from the side so the tiller is more visible.  Thanks for looking.

Looks good.  Hope it holds up for you.  It can be tough to find a board with nice straight grain.
