Anyone planning to turkey hunt?
« on: February 28, 2008, 04:52:00 PM »
I have access to a large piece of private land and hope to do my first turkey hunt this April (actually, my first hunt ever!) with my longbow.

Any advice on what broadheads, equipment, calls, etc?

I've seen the Gobbler Guillotine...looks nasty!  I'd like to try one out but don't know what kind of target would stop those flying blades of decapitation!

The first time I ever hunted turkeys was five years ago.....I was in the woods thirty minutes and had a bird.
My first thought was " These people are NUTS!!...these are the dumbest creatures on earth!!...."
That was the first and as of today, the last turkey I killed....
In five years I found out a few things;
A turkey will not cross a stream.
A turkey will not cross a logging road.
A turkey will not cross a fence.
And most importantly, a turkey will usually do exactly the opposite of what you want him to do, at exactly the time he feels like doing it!!!
I think that first bird had terminal cancer and just didn't want to go on living....so he committed Hari Kari by walking in front of the first idiot with a shotgun, which just happened to be me!!
Anyway, this will be year two with the stickbow, last year I called in two gobblers (that were chased off by the neighbors dog) and a coyote that slinked in just out of bow range.
Hopefully this year will be different, but you never know....

Savate, Bowhunting them can be tough, with a bow,It's best done from a ground blind or some other type of frontal concealment. The little buggers have a certain knack for spotting the bow being drawn back. I am not good with a diaphram call, but had no trouble mastering a box or slate. The turkeys seem to like them , I've wacked two a year for a few years. I've found that I prefer my 45#recurve for them, shots typically are 10 yds or less from my blind and I think any standard broadhead works fine as long as the turkey is in two pieces when I pick them up off of the ground. I'm only joking .I use Stinger 2 Blades, 2016 shafts and an arrow grabber placed behind the broadhead to prevent passthrough, I've never lost a turkey that the arrow stayed in. I did lose one that I shot with a compound a couple of years back, The arrow went through and the turkey flew off of the side of the ridge and glided clear out of sight. Good Luck, hope that there is something here to help you.

the first snow of the year was coated with an inch of rain, that equals two inches of ice.  I went out to scrape the seeds from under my finch feeders.  that ice is still two inches thick.  I hope the turkeys made it through the winter okay, a lot of pheasants did not.  I will go just to be out there, even if the numbers are down.

I'll be after em as much as possible.  Ms. Hope is scheduled to stop here on opening day of the season so hopefully I'll blood her by the second or third week.  If not, it won't be for lack of trying.

I shoot snuffers and a variety of calls.

best tip I can give you is get a portable blind and practice shooting out of it well before you hunt.  They make a world of difference

Great ideas (practice shooting out of a blind, using regular broadheads).  I'm going to check the IWANNA and Craigslist in my area to see if I find a used one.

I guess I should get a call and start practicing that too.

Hey DeerDog...wanna guide?  :)

Yes, I`m going for those birds. Don`t know what bow i`m takeing yet.Thinking about getting a bear kodiak mag for the turks with snuffers on the business end.Hardest part is getting drawed back without being seen.Once you get him in range of course.Gamelands are hard to hunt because they get educated fast. But they`re there.  ;)

I have shotgunned them, which was pretty easy, and have missed a couple with the bow, which also was pretty easy(it is much harder to hit them than miss them  :banghead: ) This will be the year that I stick one, however.

I just got back in town from putting out the last food plots before turkey season. I plan on being out after them most of the season here. I hunt recurve only and "run and gun", no blinds and very little calling. Just a yelper box and a slate--its been a hoot hunting them this way. Prepares me for CO elk-I hunt them the same way. I get caught making the draw but the adrenaline rush while its going on is well worth the price of admission!!

21 days to wait till the season opens here then after a week and a half here going to Kansas, then Missouri, then Kentucky, then maybe Arkansas on the way home and get home in time to finish the last few days here. I think I am going to call it The Redneck Turkey Tour or maybe The Redneck Turkey Roadtrip. Anyway it is going to be fun and I cant wait.  :D    :D

"The first turkey that ever came to me on the ground did it a long time ago, I sat there with my hands shaking and my breath short and my heart hammering so hard I could not understand why he could not hear it.

The last turkey that came to me last spring had exactly the same effect and the day that this does not happen is the day that I quit.

The last one that ever does come to me will call forth the same emotion that the second one did,   I will sit there waiting, gun up and  heart thundering and say to myself what I have said on every single occasion since the second one.   I’m glad I lived to see it one more time."
