Crack in Riser?
« on: August 15, 2013, 05:27:00 PM »
Please help me.  I noticed a slight crack in my riser last night while shooting.

The Bow is a 60 inch 59 Kodiak style recurve with a Take Down sleeve style handle.  The wood is Dymond Wood and the bow is 53 lbs at 28 inches.  I draw it 28 3/4.

Can I just put super glue on it?  Should I be concerned?  I was ready to hunt with this bow and shoot it well.  I cant even get my fingernail in it.

I would use a,very thin super glue.
Mostly to seal it and keep moisture out.

Loc-Tite 420 will do the trick.

I dont have a syringe, should I just apply it on the outside of the crack and let it wick in?

You can use the really thin super glue and keep putting coats on until the area around the crack is raised up. Then just sand it smooth and blend into the rest of the shelf. After its done, that crack should disappear.

Thanks guys. I am always Paranoid when it comes to this stuff and figure its best to ask the experts rather than over react.  Glad I did.

Do the big box stores like Lowes carry an industrial strength super glue?  I've never seen locktite 440 before, just plain locktite.

Do you guys know what causes a crack like this? Is the wood just drying out and checking or do you think It was when I shot a few arrows that were too light?

That is a high stress area. The wood is pretty thin there to. The Loc-tite 420 is like a thin super glue and wicks into the crack. Find a loc-tite dealer that can at least order it for you or  web page

Charlie,
Fastenal usually has 420 on the shelf,  If not they can have it for you the next day.  If you want though, I can ship you up a bottle later on today.

Hobby Lobby or any store that sells supplies for building RC planes sells super glue type adhesives. They will have several types. There is one that is extremely thin and will wick into any crack.

Thad, that is a great offer but I cannot accept.  That stuff is Like 25 bucks a bottle.

My neighbor crashes his RC plane weekly, I will check with him and see where he gets his stuff.

WE have a Hobby Lobby about 30 minutes from here as well.
