Takedown recurve build along (All Done)
« on: September 11, 2013, 11:06:00 AM »
I have had extra time on my hands. So I thought I would try to do a build along. So here goes. I will be attempting to make a 62" bow out of Claro walnut and curly Koa. The first thing I am going to do is cut out some riser parts.

.                                                                            .

Once the block was cut out square I cut  the profile for the flare.

Wow, freehanding those cuts would be a bear for me. I would never get them to fit!

That is some beautiful wood
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

After those two cut its time to fit them together.

I am not good enough with the saw for them to fit . So I have to sand them with a drum. The sanding drum has a stop on it and
I use a pattern to get every thing exact.

For the next joint I just start over by cutting out the shape. Then sand to the line using the other half of the pattern.

I will get a pic or two put on as soon as I can. The drum I use is 2x3 with 36 grit paper. It seems to do the best job for me .

Here is the drum. The black wheel on the bottom is what I call a stop.

As for the patterns they are 1/2" plywood. Each one has a center line to keep everything straight. They also have makes to tell me were the lines for the joint is going to be. I line all the marks up an two face tape the pattern down. The pattern usually set around 1/16 back from the edge to allow every thing to clean up.

It definitely took me sometime to get the patterns to fit up before they were ready to be used.
