String for Board bow
« on: September 30, 2013, 12:41:00 PM »
I am very new to both archery and bow building but I do a lot of woodworking.  I have been doing a lot of reading here and will follow the "So you wanna build a bow" thread for a board bow for my 12 year old son (he will be my guinea pig).  From the calculations I have made the bow will be 58" OAL.  My question is does anyone have recommendations on a string for this bow?

You should learn to spin your own out of Dacron B-50 bowstring material.  It is very easy when someone shows you how.  Where in Indiana do you live?

I'm in Fort Wayne.  I figure I will learn to make strings but I would like to make sure I can build reliable bows first plus all of my other woodworking.

In that case, buy a 55" string from one of the TG sponsors.  Or you could drive up I-69 to Ashley, IN and 3Rivers Archery.  They have tillering strings too.

Thanks John.  I've already found 3Rivers so I will look around there.

I use FF on all my wood bows, so that could work too. COsts more though ... $50 a spoll vs $10

Ben if you consider just how many feet on a spool of modern like DF97 compared to Dacron and how few feet you use with modern compared to Dacron, modern is a lot cheaper.
I use DF97 on all my bows from Board to high end Carbon.

I took a little drive up to Three Rivers today and they got me fixed up.  You could spend a lot of time (and money) walking around there.  Nice people too.
