66" HH style - *Materials Ordered*
« on: October 28, 2013, 02:18:00 PM »
~reply 19 starts the 2018 update~

So...Almost 5 years later and I still have the materials in the box they came in...I am going to build this in a month or so..

The stack changed to .440 of bamboo with .002 taper per lam and .040 glass to hit 45@28.

1 - .040 Clear glass
1 - .040 Brown glass
1 -  Chi-Chen riser -  14 3/4"
4 -  Bamboo Lams tapered at .002 to total .440 ( as previously discussed)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

~Edited to change to 66" and 15" riser~

I have been shooting short recurves; looking to go a bit longer and smoother. With all the chat about the HH style being smooth, I thought why not go for it. Need something to use as an all around hunting bow; small game and large goats( MS whitetail). Going for a 66" 45 @ 28, 15" riser, 4 lams for added smoothness. I have been playing in super tiller and here is the recipe I came up with.

clear glass   0.040

boo (cane) para   0.060

boo (cane) para   0.060

boo (cane) taper .001   0.090

boo (cane) taper .001   0.090

brown glass   0.040

Total wood stack .300

Total stack .380

Limb profile: 1" at 8" from center of handle, then taper to .5" at tips

Brace at 6.25".

Riser will be Persimmon (American Ebony) for a bit of weight.

Comments or improvements always welcome!

Yeah I have been in hiding the last 4 years or so.

So is this going to have a straight profile?  If so, 60" is really short and will likely start to stack on you at 28".  I wouldn't go any shorter than 64" and 66" - 68" would be better at 28" of draw.

I might could push it to 62" but that would be max.

I'll run those numbers and see what happens..

I agree with John about 60" being very short for a Hill style. If you really want to go that short I suggest to use a deflex/reflex profile. Check out Kenny's designs, they look great and from what I have heard they make some very nice shooters.

Finished a riser template today, will order glass and lams in a week or so. now on to the form. Thinking of building 1/2" string follow.

Dustin - I did some ciphering based on bows I've built and I figure you'd need a total stack of 0.385 to hit 45#.

Now this assumes you would use 0.050 glass and have a straight profile.  You said you were gonna use 0.040 glass in your original post so I'm not 100% sure if it would be simply a 0.020 increase in wood stack to make up the difference.  And in your last post you said you want to put in 1/2" string follow.  I've only built two Hill style bows with 0.040 glass and one came in light and one came in heavy, so I'm still not sure.  The 1/2" of string follow might require some additional stack too.  With my form, it makes a straight bow, but they do take on a little string follow after the first stringing and shooting.

Not sure all this helps you or not.

That does help thanks!

I'll bump the clear glass to .043 for a .383 total.

Make a flat, shoot in the string follow.

Thanks for the help!

Ever use tip wedges?

Or bump the glass to .050 for a total of an even .400. Then go 1" wide and taper to 3/8" on the tips. I think I like that idea.

I never tried tip wedges.  That's another thing I do want to experiment with sometime.

Ran the profile through Supertiller and it looks good:

glass .050 for a total stack of .400, .002 taper. 1" wide and taper to 3/8" on the tips

Where do I get this supper tiller program?  Looks pretty cool, but don't let Ol' Roy see it.  He'll really make fun of us glass bow engineering guys.

Ordered materials today. They will not be what I posted earlier. Stack and taper have changed as well.

More to come later...

http://www.buildyourownbow.com/build-alongs/is-this-the-best-rasp-for-making-a-longbow-or-a-recurve-bow/

Works great for wood lam bows as well. Unless you have a notebook with a lifetime of results, supertiller is in my opinion the only reasonable way to go about determining a wood lam bow stack thickness without alot of trial and error.
