Hickory stick bending okay?
« on: November 01, 2013, 02:26:00 AM »
I'm just about at the weight I want with this hickory board bow and would appreciate some feedback on the tiller.  It's 67" tip to tip, 1 1/2" at the fades to 3/8" at the tips and 47# @ 27".  I glued in almost 2" of reflex doing the kerf/slat (red elm) thing and trapped the back about 3/8".  It's lost about 1/2" of reflex and taken some set already.  Oh well, maybe if I shoot it enough it will wind up with an R/D profile.
It's braced at 6".

It's starting to make sense to me now Roy, and that worries me a little bit.

"Ok" means he approves, and "it's nice" is just being polite to the builder.

Just hope Roy doesn't go that route when his better half asks his opinion on her new hairdo    :D    I'm really lucky to have found this forum.  I tillered the bow using Eric's gizmo, tried the kerf/slat thing and rasped it with a Shinto saw rasp after seeing posts on those, and on and on.  And then you have Roy sending out riser blocks and glueing up BBO's for newbies.  Good people.    :)
Thanks again.

Greg, it doesn't get any better than Trad Gang, and it doesn't get any better than trad guys being helped and helping other trad guys. I have helped a few folks out in here and I have received help from others in here. That's how things should work in my mind.

Amen to that Roy, but it still amazes me that it works that way here, and works so well.  After all the help I've received from the experienced guys here, I'm hoping I can give something back to help out newer guys like myself sometime.  I'd love to do a build along, but where I'm at right now, I'm not 100% on whether my bows turn out to be shooters or if they wind up in the 25# range after I get the tillering right.    :)
