How to handle holly?
« on: November 03, 2013, 08:55:00 PM »
This afternoon I found a beautiful holly tree at the deer camp. It is almost perfectly straight. I could get maybe four staves with the largest approximately 18-20" in diameter. I didn't have time to care for it properly so I left it for later.

Open to suggestions... I remember a holly mollegamette quite a while back.   :dunno:

Holly is bad to check.
I don't know if I've seen a holly bow. arrows maybe but not bows.

Holly will be very difficult to dry and the wood isn't very strong, it is a brilliant white color however that I have used for tips.

You guys just saved a tree. I've developed the bad habit of looking for bows in every tree. Ha! Ha! But it is such a straight tree with very few limbs.

Hey red they can make nice walking sticks insert a deer antler and they look really cool I have tied a knot in young sapling and let it grow that will give you a nice domed handle
Don't know if it's up your street that one but it keeps the mind busy waiting for the rain to stop
