Anyone done business with West Penn Hardwoods?
« on: December 15, 2013, 05:36:00 PM »
Just found their site today, and am really excited to order some wood for risers, but as you order sight unseen, I was hoping some people on here might be able to share experiences they've had with them and their product.  Thanks!

Only time I bought from them was when they went to E.T.A.R. at Denton Hill and I was able to pick through their entire stack of wood there. I found two pieces that I deemed worthy... bocote and lacewood.

I live 20 miles from there. Bought some bow building and turkey box call wood from Rocky. No complaints here. He has a pretty amazing supply of woods in his warehouse too

Shawn, care to elaborate?  Wood no good?  I would love to be able to look through his stock for myself, but am on the opposite side of the country haha.  Also, snapper, do you order online or go in person?  Pleased with the quality of the wood for the price?

Sorry guys.  Shouldn't have made it sound that way.   There wasn't anything wrong with the product but I had called several times checking up on my order and told that it's on the way when it hadn't even shipped.  I didn't like that u couldn't pic the exact piece I wanted like I can on some other websites.

But mainly if your wanting a 8/4 square for risers  in my opinion KennyM gets my vote.  But I understand KennyM may not have what if like to use.

Didn't mean to insult anyone.

I have ordered several times in the past as I could see the pictures of what they were selling. Twice I ordered sight unseen. Won't ever do that again form them. I received absolute junk. still have those pieces 5 years later cause I don't burn wood in my shop.
I chose to buy from many other suppliers that like repeat business and never found the need to go back. I will if I need to but as an aware shopper.

Thanks guys!  Kenny m gets my vote too, but I've been wanting some macassar and ziricote for riser woods.  Any other places you guys know of that would have this available in 2x2x22 that you've had good experiences with?

I sell it. along with veneers.

I can't always get pictures out as sometimes it means cutting up a bunch of wood to do so, but will guarantee what I ship. If you don't like it, send it back. Some pieces, pictures aren't a problem.

thanks, bigjim

Rare Earth Hardwoods, is my local supplier. They have an excellent selection and some very fine pieces. Can't speak of ordering on line, as I usually purchase from their cut off bin! Great stuff for a good price. Their website is a little tricky at first, but there are tons of pictures.
Another I just found (someone posted about on PowWow) is  www.cookwoods.com.  Their site is easy to navigate, and you can see the piece you are buying. Haven't purchased from them yet, but I intend to.
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.
