hickory/walnut/hickory layout

I've never done this combo before but had a teacher asked about making a bow...we glued the stack into a very mild r/d which will likely end up flat.  It is barely 1 1/2" wide and 1/2" thick...not quite 66" total length.  We cut a stack of 12" hickory/walnut lams and stacked them for the riser/grip... I'm hoping for a 64" n-t-n bow that will be a good 45# since he has never shot a longbow.  Any layout suggestions would be appreciated.

I think 45# might be a bit much at 28" for only 1.5" wide. Id keep it full width to mid limb then taper to 1/2" mocks.

I might shoot for 40# but that's just my take. Hickory should spray together either way but it'll take more set at 45#. I think at that length and width a 40# bow will shoot faster at 10gpp than a 45# bow at 10gpp. I have no actual facts to back that up just a feeling. Also a 40# bow will kill a deer and will be easier to shoot.

If its not too late Bob, Id keep that width to at least mid limb, or where your reflex takes off. 1 1/2" is a tad narrow, but its a tri lam with glue between layers, that's stuff is mean!

that's what I did...I posted pics on a couple of sites but it's harder to do here... I used TB3 for the first time so I'm letting it dry a couple of weeks.

If you haven't done the glue-up yet heat temper the hickory belly lam to increase the compression strength. Hickory isn't all that strong in compression.

I already did the glue up Pat... I will remember it next time though...I am assuming that it's too late to do since I glued it with TB3..?

Yes, it is too late. TB glues release at 150deg and tempering will get it that hot at least.
