1st build TD longbow ?
« on: January 02, 2014, 10:12:00 AM »
Hello everyone. I am planning to start building my 1st  fiberglass bow. Actually the first bow of any kind. I kinda wanted to build a TD longbow, but see the Binghams TD kit only comes in 68 inches and I don't want a 68 inch bow. Are there any other options for a shorter ( 62 to 64 inch ) 3 peice longbow for a first time builder or should I just go with a one peice.  Also can one just use the one peice limb profile and make it into a 3 peice?
Of course I could just go with the TD recurve.
One last question ( for now ) I still have to build a hot box so what are folks using since you can't get 100 watt bulbs any more?

Thanks!

The bingham kit can be made to 62"s you just need to tell them that when ordering materials- I've made their pronounced TD to 62" with good results. Hit the stores- I still see light bulbs on the shelves.

Re the bulbs, I now use halogen bulbs and they work great.

Good call Bob, I remember seeing the other day that Halogens are still being produced and thought they might be the ticket for hot boxes. Although I maintain that as long as you use the same amount of total watts, it shouldn't matter if you use CFL or incandescent or halogen ... only downside is that turnign the CFLs on and off will reduce their life some. Sry to hijack.

Trux is right though, as long as you choose the stack thickness accordingly you should be able to make it shorter. Also, Kenny M has a nice design for a RD longbow that I think is 58/60 and 62/64" and all the matl's needed to build.

OK, got the plans for the pronounced TD longbow from Binghams. So if I want to make a 62 or 64 instead of the  68  can I make the form for the 68 and just put in a locating pin in the form 3 inches from the end?

There are also metal halide bulbs for saltwater fish tanks that come in 4' lengths and get hot enough that aquariums with them require chillers.  Got a nasty burn from one once, would think they'd make a beautiful hot box.
