I always enjoyed reading this thread last year so I figured I would start a new one for 2014. Hopefully others will post as well!

Today I worked on shaping two risers. One is a R/D bow riser out of a solid piece of bocote. The other for a new Hill bow using cocobolo, maple and bocote. Now just need to get all the core lams ready and check again for proper fit!

I like both these risers but the one with the Cocobolo etc really grabs me! I know they will both 'pop' once the finish hits them.

The Coco riser is going to have bocote lams under clear glass. The R/D one will have black glass front and back. I can't wait to get them finished glued up!

I spent the afternoon at my part-time job in our city/county library. (Don't laugh, Roy, money is money.)

This evening I'm processing a doe that's been chilling for a week, or so. (My wife shot it during our special late season.)

Also considering what to build for the swap.   :rolleyes:

shot the bow today- never had a bow like it before- shoots fast, and exactly where i am looking- never could say that before!!!!

my first shot out of it was a 50 yard shot just to check arrow flight- hit exactly what i was aiming at!!!!-never done that before??!

Besides work, I did manage to sign up for the swap again, and finally get photobucket to upload some pics of a new bow so I could post!

I cut and shaped a new form for a 3 piece d/r longbow. Gonna check everything with fresh eyes tomarrow, and install the hardware, and maybe get a limb or two in the oven.

Shot about a hundred arrows with my son. I've some hay bales set up in the backyard with paper plates on them. We play a game that's kinda like "H.O.R.S.E.". ONLY way to get him away from that miserable X-Box. Then scraped on my hickory self ow for awhile. Been working on that since Nov. On a related note; my lovely spouse has taken to calling me by the Native American name "Scrapes On A Stick". Says she's leaving me for a better bowyer named "Eats Every Day". So I've decided to trade "Cuts With Her Tongue" for a fletching jig. Left helical, serious inquiries only please.

Last night I did the layout and spliced the lams for my first Hill build.  Osage riser, amb-boo cores, yew veneers, and clear glass.  I had a heck of a time getting the yew to stick together with CA glue.  Ended up using titebond for them.  I also got my hotbox 75% done.  All I have to do is wire it up with a few lights.  Pretty pumped to get to glue up phase.  Kenny and Jsweka have been a huge help.  Thanks guys

humph!! and i thought it was just me- i couldnt get my yew lam splices to stay stuck with ca either- eventually tried a 5 min epoxy- clamped overnight.
i will try the titebond next time.

Built a new outfeed table last night for my tablesaw and fondled two half-done hill style bows.  I really want to get the yew one done for the Howard Hill Hog Hunt in just over two weeks.  I think that means tonight I'll be trapping the backs a little and putting in some string nocks.  Maybe if I get carried away I'll start shaping a riser or two as well.  Those two weeks will be gone before I can say 'boo'.

Good to go on the titebond to splice the yew lams.  Hot box is done.  Mocked up the layout and rubber banded everything together.  Looks good.  Now to build up the courage to glue everything together.  I'm getting there

Hey Ben,

Using rubber bands, you might want to put a narrow slat down the limb centers on top of the pressure strip.

I think the bands pull down on the limb edges just fine, but can cup the glass up in the limb centers. The air hose forms do the opposite as they push more in limb center.

Apex Predator used to use some sort of a pc of plastic latticework or something down the center  on his band forms. I miss that dude's creations!

I bought a strip of 1/4"x1/2" oak trim to use as that piece, but it doesn't flex near enough at the fades.  I'm planning on using a scrap piece of romex to put pressure in the middle on top of my 1/16th aluminum pressure strip.  You think that'll do?

I think romex is a great idea for presure down the middle.  Good call.

Got that outfeed table installed.  Marked a few lines on the bows to start trapping the back to.  Not as much as I hoped to get done, but it was a start!

 

Once I weld up a new stand at the proper height, the bandsaw will roll into that notch by the compressor.  Not only gives me an outfeed table for the bandsaw, but frees up space for a new edge sander!
