Put two red fox and a mink hide in a tanning solution to soak for a week or two, were given to me by a friend. I will probably use them for string silencers.  Another friend gave me 3 beaver tails that will be used for handle wraps, need to skin and flesh them after dinner tonight.  I think I'll use one on my trade bow.

Ben are you saying that tb3 puts moisture into the wood?  haven't used it on a bow but that never occurred to me.

It does.  I like the bond it gives (more general carpentry work) but it puts a little moisture in there.  With the RH here it's not such a big deal, though.  Still prefer it to most other glues, except hide glue-I try to use that for any bow work.

Dan, I'd like to know how the hides turn out when you're finished. I have a red fox hide in the freezer that I'd like to use as string silencer material. (It was messed up from my pitiful skinning job but would work well for silencers.)

Roy, never used mink before, but sure is a nice dense fur so I think it should do really well.

Red, I've never tanned a fox hide before.  I've done several deer and they turned out ok, not as good as a professional job though.  Fox should be a lot easier to work, so I expect it to be fairly easy to get a decent looking job.  Don't have to be perfect for silencers any way.  I'll let you know how they turn out.

Cooked down another two or so pounds of pine rosin.  I added it to the other two hanging out in the fridge.  Still have another maybe five pounds to melt and strain.  And more to gather from that tree.  Planning on making string wax from most of it.  That will make a LOT of wax, I tell ya.

Got home with about 5 min of light left. Grabbed my glass bow and 1 arrow. Took 1 shot at 23 yrds.    I've learned to quit while I'm ahead! Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while!

Looks nice, John...

Be sure to clamp it every two inches and pad the back and belly with something so the clamps don't mar the wood.

lol...

Yeah, it's kinda slapped together..but it works.
Those black tubes lead down to a box/cover that goes over a 4 gang dado saw. Used it for cutting slots in the "logs" for a product we used to make and sell called Megalogs. Kinda like great big Lincoln logs. The dados cut an appx 1.75" wide .25" deep slot in a 1.75" wide pine "log"...4 slots at a time.

Pushing those through by hand....lol...it wasn't the dust/chip collector I was worried about. Every now and then a log would basically explode in the cutter.....I kept spare underwear around...

We haven't made them in a few years, but here's what they looked like...

been a while since I did production work ['70s]
but when you do thousands of wood parts in a week [wood playground elements]its amazing how much stuff would "come apart!!"--wood and tools!!I've seen a couple blood trails leaving the shop too!!
I had a boss he just said "pay attention!"
he must have had nerves of steel putting us teen age meatheads on those big shapers!!HA!

I hear ya...lol

Reminds me of a summer I spent doing roofing..mostly shingle.
Boss said " Guys..I just want you to know...the second both your feet leave the roof..you're fired!"
