Nice bows Mike, that maple really pops with the stain.

I'm going to tackle a couple of Osage billets I got a couple of years ago. I'm thinking a 2 piece take down for 2 reasons, I don't have one and i don't have a band saw for splicing the billets. I know I could do it by hand but I still have reason 1.

Yeah, I know: c-word. And she's working to use a longbow as soon as she can. But in the meantime, anything to get one of the kids into the woods. I thought it was cool she asked for the recurve type instead of the double c word.

Mike, that quilted maple with the dye is amazing. I think I'm going to have to try that next time.

So, a nice gentleman recently gave me a couple of staves: (1) a long, straight, clean, very old, very tight-grained piece of yew; and (2) an old vine maple stave. He has a bunch of other old staves, mostly osage. He said if I do a decent job on the first two, I can have the rest. Holy pressure! I keep thinking about what to do. I think I'll start in earnest late fall whne I'll have a little time. Maybe start a little build along so I can get enough guidance not to mess these up. Especially the yew, I want to make something special out of a stave like that.

i agree David, anything to get the flame burning.
my daughter has shot bow extensively- but has shown a real aptitude for precision rifle shooting- winning competitions etc- shes only 12, but at 11 was winning against groups of adults etc- who quite fancy themselves as marksmen!!

so now when we go stumpshooting, i take my bow, and she takes her 22- its still great times, and io know that she will come back to the bow when she is ready- its an awesome feeling innit!!
them wanting to share in the bush!!

i know you will do an awesome job on the staves- cant wait to see pics!!

still would love to build one of the "primitive" crossbows someday- anybody ever done one- or has some leads ??

i like the workbench Darin- real handy when you live in some of the warmer climes- well built- nothing to be ashamed of!!

that quilted maple kinda looks like waves- its very cool- the dye really brings it out- yer a braver man than me Mike- taking the plunge and staining it!!- great job- but what you have done, is really inspired me to make a bow with some white glass- really classy.
i have some really nice figured sapele veneers, and with that on the belly and white glass on the back of a hill bow- would be so sweet- for me that is!

Made a new longbow riser jig for my pattern sander..I used some scrap pieces of cabinet grade plywood I got with that truck load of wood I bought last month. Some of the pieces had nice veneer glued onto both sides. I had a couple of riser blocks glued up, I put one thru the bandsaw then sanded to shape.. Came out nice and fit the form like it should.

I just Went and bought more sandpaper!!! Man I really stink at spraying buffalo hide!! First coat was to thick and got a lot of orange peal. So I sanded it back down. Second coat seemed good but I put it on to thick and got a lot of runs. So I'm sanding the runs out and hopefully the third times the charm!! Then I still have several coats of satin to do. CRAP!!!

Bubby - it is Ca. The lake in the background is Hume Lake I am hunting a new zone (new area to me) This area has a good amount of Black Bear activity. Archery only is over...things open up for us again on the 20th in D7 and the 28th in D8. I am heading out on Friday to do some more scouting and getting ready for the next go around.

Finished up a couple dozen arrows I been putting off fletching. I ain't never cared much for fletching, enjoy making wood arrows up to fletching time. They shoot fine though, enjoy that part.

split some walnut into staves.  Some nice reflex in a few of them.  Need to dry another season now.

I started making 3 piece take-down longbows to add to the variety of longbows I build. I experienced something similar to when i started building one piece bows. The first couple bows are typically very blocky before I get bold enough to really start to shape the riser. I got bold today and took one of my blocky risers and did some shaping...what do you think? Is the left one better than the club on the right?
