cunruhshoot...

Sorry about your loss there bud..that sucks.

is that the bamboo that split? Looks the right color and the crack "ran" like it does with boo.

...if that is the bamboo, where are the nodes?
Is this an experiment with action bamboo for a backing?

If there were nodes and you sanded them off, I've heard that's a pretty firm no-no for backing

Roy - The bamboo was 1/8 thick at the edges and tapered slightly less towards the nocks ends.

Zradix - There were only 4 nodes on this piece of bamboo  - the picture where the splinter is...is mid limb in between the nodes. I did't sand off the nodes but I am sure I did something wrong. Maybe scraped too much of the pith off or left the bamboo too thick. I had to take the Hickory down pretty thin to get every thing bending smooth.

Thanks for the info..I've gotta learn how to do it better too..lol

I'm bummed for ya.

Ok..that pic makes the thickness of the lams look big...thought the boo was about 1/4" and the hickory 3/16" or so.

Weird you had to go so thin on the hickory..if that boo is 1/8" the hickory looks thinner even.

I don't know enough about bow making to give you good advice.

..but I can wish ya good luck on the next...soo..

GOOD LUCK ON THE NEXT ONE!

Robert,

That is an impressive system.  I really like that you are grounding it.  Can you give more details on your grounding system and maybe tell folks why it is so important with the pipes you are using?

John, this is my first time making a DC collection system other than the single hose.. I researched on the internet and read several different ways to ground the PVC pipes and other parts. The reason for grounding is in case of static electricity build up in the PVC pipes. Static electricity from friction in the pipes can cause a spark, the spark could cause a fire in the collector. I wrapped the pipes with copper wire and ran short brass screws into the pipe to hold wire down and will run wire to each aluminum blast gate. I have a 6ft ground rod driven into the soil for the actual grounding. Some have said their ungrounded system has shocked them. I am just trying to work safe..I have 2 good fire extinguishers in the shop just in case..

Thanks Robert.  I see you are in the environmental business too.  I've spent most of my career around stuff that can blow up.  Some of the worst is ordinary dust, mostly because it's really not an obvious hazard.  A sugar dust explosion in GA killed 14 in 2008.

Running air and dust through PVC causes a lot of static charge and this can lead to a spark which can ignite explosive dust concentrations in your system.

so when i bought my dust collector, it came with the ground wire kit . and the instructions were to run the wire through on the inside of all the pipes, and when it got to a gate- a tiny, hole either side of the gate allows the wire around the gate( so the gate can still function), and then one end of the  wire was led back to a ground on the actual dust extractor unit, and other ends also grounded at the machines that were hooked up permanently.

does this all sound reasonable- if it needs to be changed- well i need to do it-
any input ...John, or any body else?

I'm home alone too Roy, my wife is at the shore for a week.  Plan to get some hunting in and finish up my chimney liner project.  Oh yeah, and drink a few beers.

Fujimo, that sounds like a better way To ground to me. I am hoping the brass screws I am using to hold the wire down help remove static. I got my 2 HP HF dust collector out of my storage trailer yesterday.. I plugged it in..it is much louder than the 1hp. The flow coming out of the exhaust end was pretty good though. I will be converting over to the 2hp. The portable 1 HP will go into storage for now.

Good day today. Started out by fitting a big scary looking blade to my bandsaw and splitting some big pieces of Doug Fir for my friend. This wood had been salvaged from a canal where it spent at least 70 years in the water. The wood had turned a neat shade of grayish green in places and should make a cool coffee table.
Then I put some finish on a maple pedestal for a deer head mount.

I think it looks pretty good. Still needs some stain and varnish.
Then, after a good barbecue dinner, I tried to shoot up my new broadhead target. My shoulder is not cooperating today, so I played with some arrow/ broadhead combos and a pair of lighter weight bows till I was happy.
Good luck wrecking the new target though. It's 18 inches deep and the deepest any of my bows can penetrate it is about 8 inches.
Dave.

Nice piece of work, Dave. I haven't seen any moose stories, yet. No luck??
