Gathering info on 3 pieces
« on: January 04, 2014, 05:58:00 AM »
Ok guys my goal this winter is to make my first take down. I need to get some supplies having to do with the hardware and any jig I need to set the pins and bolts.

Can someone point me in the right direction on what I need to do?

Kenny was very generous to send me a pattern for the limbs and riser of a takedown that he needs more input on. I will get all my supplies from him as usual but need to find the other proper tools needed.

Thanks guys!!
Justin

I've tried a few ways with a homemade jig like bingham's, and I'm starting to think that the best way to drill a takedown is to clamp on the first limb to the riser, align it, and drill both holes right through the limb into the riser ona  drill press. Then repeat for the second limb.

Obviously mark the locations first and everything, but the jig is  PITA in my experience.

Only downside to drilling through the limb for the alignment pins is you need to fill part of the hole in the limb from the back side with a hardwood dowel, and then you need some kinda limb butt overlay to cover it up.

i bought the binghams jig- and did not like it- so for the only take down i have built i did as Ben says above- i drilled through both limb and riser simultaneously - for the pins that was fine, but for the bolts, i used a pilot hole, to match the one required for the limb- and then enlarged accordingly in the riser for the insert. i had blocks clamped to the table on the drill press, to keep everything 90* to the drill bit- marked for position so i could replicate easily.
shape the limbs and riser after drilling...i didnt do that- so was a lot tougher to get everything lined up- but i got it to work well with lots of fiddling.

What I have found out on limb butt overlays is you need to keep you wedge plenty thick in the feathered out area of the overlay. The reason being if you get very much flex the feathered end will pop up. Also be sure to use smooth-on not CA for the overlays.

I actually use two of the bingham dowel jigs. I predrill the riser with the pin and bolt. I drill the bolt through the limb mount the jig in reverse on the riser, with a long bolt thru the limb and riser, and use a laser to align the limbs by adjusting the set screws on the jig. I then take it off and drill the alignment pin in the limb. There was a thread on how to do this a while ago and it works for me.
