Talkingcabbage,

The osage took a back seat to a bathroom remodel...
One of those things that needed to be fixed...I always hate fixing someone else's work, always takes twice as long as it should of...
As for my newest trade bow ....prepping the yew this weekend.

Time to chime in I guess.  I was the one that caused canopyboy stress last year.  He built me a beautiful Hill style with cherry veneers.  He did a great job as I love the look of cherry and have a bunch of furniture in my house that I built out of cherry.

I'm relatively new to shooting trad(hunted with a recurve until I was about done with college in 1979 but just started shooting trad again a couple of years ago).

I currently have an old Pearson recurve I bought off the big auction site, a Samick Sage TD, the 66" wood bow that Eagleone built for me and the Hill from last years trade.  I have a few I have built that are mostly hickory backed hickory or maple.

I prefer anything my builder wants to build and that he/she is comfortable building.  I will be attempting to build my first glass bow this spring and haven't decided exactly what that will be yet either.  It's not a lot of help but leaves the door fairly open I hope.

Well I think I have gotten down to a choice of two different veneer combos. One is a stained black locust and american elm to model a rich crimson bloodwood and I would go with walnut, cherry wood and bocote riser overlay and bocote nock overlays. The other choice is to use some veneers I got from Troy B. Spliced dark birdseye maple with osage and osage belly.

What do you guys think?

I glued up the riser combo that I will be using with either set up.

I like the splice also. Course...I also like figured wood, sweet colored wood, backed bows, tri-lams, snakes(and skins), selfbows,
snub-nosed, recurves, hills, take-downs, and PVC    :wavey:
I'm set up for r/d glass right now but I may make a snub or hill form for the swap. I may also cut an r/d in half like Swiss has done. (Just need to find that build-along)

heres candidate #1. nice rings, moderate crown, and one big ole knot .  the picture doesn't do the rings justice, its blurry. early wood is hairline.

candidate #2  not bad rings, clean stave, not as much thickness on the belly for a handle, but thick enough. little bit of twist.

candidate 3 is these black locust billets.
they are bookmatched, i cut a bad end off of one, and the backs are sealed with different stuff, thats why they look different.

a friend just gave me this decades old slab of black walnut, looks like its got some curl to it.  its pretty checked up, but if theres any good wood in there it might find its way onto a tip overlay, handle, or static recurve underlay.

That's a nice piece of walnut. You might be able to fill the checks with colored epoxy and get more use from it. I've never done it, but it might look really cool.

I have a question. Would a piece of Khaya (African Mahogany) be strong enough for a riser?
It's a fairly hard piece.
