Well I got mine tillered out to 26" and it looks good. I have put a couple of dozen arrows through it and there is very little hand shock. I will take care of that with thinning the tips. problem is it came in a little lite 5# or so. I have the length to take some off the tips but how much can I expect to gain with 1/2-1" off each tip. I hate to scrap it as it is the best bow I have made so far. Can't do pics at the moment as the women folk have stolen every camera in the house.

ouch soy, that sucks!

razor, have you tried heating the belly? might could bring you up a bit. feel for with the camera "theft". i bought myself a canon ($500) for scouting/bows/ and such. wife has taken it over. i have to ask where it is all the time, and if I can use it.

Moose, it is an Ipe belly with a hickory backing, glued on with tb111 so heating isn't an option. I think I may have to add an osage belly slat. Will be my first tri-lam  :)

If you could cut one inch off each end you would probably make that 5 pounds.

I'm presently working on two all bamboo bows and they both shoot well, but they are a bit underweight for my swap. I piked one of them by 3 inches and it's still a bit light and it shoots so well I don't want to touch it again. I started another one tonight and I have a question. This will be a straight limbed longbow with some glued in reflex and I'm using natural bamboo for the back and belly. It will be 1 3/8 wide at the fades and will end up tapering to about 3/8 at the nocks. If I were to use cherry or walnut for the mid lam, how thick should I make the lam given that I'm looking for about 55 to 60# @ 28 inches? The bamboo lams will be no more than 1/8 thick tapering to I/16 at the tips.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Just a guess at 5/16. A little thicker in the middle if tapered about .003 or .004.
3/8 tips, sound safe enough. I've only tried one of these and my tips were too narrow and they twisted on me.

I'd also guess around 5/16" for the core, maybe even 3/8" for a bow of 66-68" length.

Thanks guys. I'll start with 1/2 inch tips and work them down gradually.

I assume your tapering the core too ... I'd personally probably taper it by somewhere between 1/16" and 1/8".

So for example 5/16 tapering the 1/4" or 3/16" thick at the tips.

That's what I'm thinking, I just wasn't sure of the starting thickness. I might add tip wedges to stiffen the last 6 inches as well. The last one nearly came out too thin at the tips.

Use the cherry, it's stronger than walnut and 5/16th is good..

I'll be using the cherry. The walnut that I was using for cutting lams has decided that it wanted to become a roller coaster.

Only a couple of coats more of Buffalo Hide and mine will be done. It has a killer piece of zebra wood that I can't wait to show you guys. By some miracle it even came in within the 5 lb range my victim specified. Hopefully it will go out this weekend.
