anybody for leftovers... pics pg5-finally!!!
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:07:00 AM »
so... have started on my next kenny m bow.
a good mate gave me a very high quality piece of curly maple

he is a guy who produced product for the music wood industry, problem was it was only 4" wide, 1" thick and 23" long. really wanted to build a bow from it.

so gathered up a pile of other left over scraps, some really good Yew- that was only about 18" long, some left over boards from my floor, some walnut off cuts from my first riser etc

really had to think about it heaps- so that i minimised the waste, but this is what i have come up with so far...

gotta grind lams yet, and get the riser all cut out.

still 5 weeks of hunting season!so will find time where i can.  :D    :D

Now that combo looks sweet together.

When I was growing up in North Dakota, we always saved the leftovers from our dinners over the week. Then on Sunday the main meal was served at noon. But for supper we always had what was called "Seven Day" it was always my favorite supper.

Your description reminded me of that.

Very cool.  My splices only look that good in my dreams.  Nice.
It's hard to make a wooden bow which isn't beautiful, even if it's ugly.

wow! thanks guys   :notworthy:
the trick is going to be to keep the belly splice lined up with the back splice- so it matches well.
thinking about a trick i saw that kenny did, where he drilled a small hole under the overlay area, and used a toothpick pegging everything together to keep everything in position, and then i thought maybe the same thing at the limb tips, beyond where i am going to cut it off.

any ideas/experience with this anyone?

the splice is going to be about 12" from the center of the bow- maple towards outside, yew at the riser, with yew cores.

thanks for looking fellas- means heaps an'heaps coming from you guys on the "bench"   :)

Wayne, I'd make sure they are opposite, for strength and ease of alignment.  So it makes an x on back and belly so to speak.

Looks great man!!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I got the toothpick idea from Roy. One or two into the riser and one at each tip keeps it all in line.
