Video bow build along

I've been wanting to do this for quite a while and finally made the time to do it. Ryan Sanpei (S2) did all of the editing (forever indebted!) and Blacktail 101 ran the camera for me (Thanks for sacrificing your only day off!). Enjoy

Most interesting. That profile sander looks great,is it a machine you had made to your specs? Bows look great also. Bue--.

Yes, that is a converter old shaper. Used some parts off of a combo 12" belt disc sander (6X48" belts). My brother does some machining and knocked it out for me. It is AWESOME! I have since gotten the dust collection hooked up to it and now it really is a dream to use.

Thanks for the video.  I love seeing how you "big boys" get it done with the nicer machines.

What I liked most, though, was seeing that you put on your "ears and nose" as I call it with my kids.  My grandpa died from emphysema - never smoked a day in his life - but worked every day in the wood shop without a mask.  It destroyed his lungs and the last many years of his life were very painful.

Again, thanks for the video and the good example!

That is one heck of a video... I have watched it three times so far and going to go for my fourth round. I need to make some templates and a sander like the one you use to mate everything. What a time saver!!! I do it all by hand and it is so long to get a riser all set and ready to go.

Your ways really make me think how I could make my bow building more productive.

The forstner bit is 1 1/4". Works great for my 1 1/4" spindle on the smaller sander.

I am very interested in your drilling jig.  I guess I don't understand how you get the exact cent of that jig to line up with the limbs.  Do you just get you limbs to the right size and line it up?  You make that yourself or have someone make it for you?

Matt,

Coming out of the limb form, I CAREFULLY sand one edge of the limb just until I grind off all of the squeeze out and first expose a clean edge showing all of the lams. This gives me a straight edge which I then use against the fence of the table saw and rip the limb to 1 5/8". The center of the hole in the drill jig is 11/16" from the table top, placing the limb pin alignment holes and bolt hole dead center in the middle of the limb. I had a machinist make the jigs for me. Use a hardened steel drill insert, otherwise you'll hog out the drill holes in the aluminum over time.

How do you go about getting your templates made for your profile sander? I want to try to make a bow with some nice curves that mate up perfectly?

Did you have someone make those for you? Any info or resorse you can send my way would be awesome. Thanks again for the video.

I hope you do not get tired of all the questions because I have one more. I know that saw blades do not like bow glass, so what kind of table saw blade is recommended for this purpose, number of teeth, metal?
