First time making a bamboo backed and bellied bow!
« on: July 15, 2014, 10:10:00 PM »
I've made quite a few Bamboo backed bows but always wanted to try both. The natural bows shoot so good and this bow sure is quick. I had a old Ipe board laying in the corner and I added a black walnut handle. 64" NTN #55 @ 28

Shot this bow a bunch tonight and it's quite a shooter, looking forward to making some more.

Very nice.  I like the stain you put on it, too.

Nice bow, Tracy! Can you give some details on how you prepared the belly?

Dunno if there aren`t cores suiting better than ipe but I think so...
Anyway the bow looks great with a clean tiller (a little difference between top-bottom limb, right?).
Is it straight or with some reflex?

Beautiful bow! I would love to know the specs on it and a little more about how you built it.

Thanks guys! The belly is prepared the same as the back, this is a board bow so the challenge was there to get my tapering right before adding the belly boo. This is a strait limb design with a different riser then I normally make like the Hill style.

I always add a 1.5 reflex at glue up and usually comes out strait or slight string follow after break in. This was a 3/4 inch board to start I tapered it to 1/2 at the fades and a little over 1/8 at the tips. I thought it was an 1/8th lol!

I had to trap the belly some to meet weight but not much tillering was needed I was very pleased. There is a very slight difference between the limbs but I learned a long time ago shot first and see how well they shoot before you chase that much difference. Most the time it doesn't matter at all      ;)

Can't wait to try this on my laminated Hill Styles!

Thanks for looking!

Tracy

That's a beauty! I've been building (and breaking) bamboo backed and bellied bows recently too and I really like them. Yours has a classic look and the stain on the boo looks great too.
