Garolite G10 phenolic in risers?
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:36:00 PM »
Hello:
Please share what you know about using G10 instead of regular phenolic in risers.  Thanks.

It's much stronger, and much more difficult to work with.  You'll want a carbide tipped bandsaw blade, makes it much better but they're expensive.  I use it in all of my risers because of the design I wanted to use.

I cut through the laminations on the back of the bow, which offer a lot of stability and strength when in tact.  Didn't want any blowing up on me so I use the g10.  I also like to cut past center and heavily contour the riser, which would likely make it too weak with just wood, and would eventually twist with pheno.  Here's a pic

Kirk from Bigfoot Bows uses G10 in an I Beam format in his recurves. Like Born of Mud said it is much stronger than Phenolic.

I still want that bow.  Makes me want to get my hands on some for a retuned riser for my static recurve.  Like to get one that has the grip built for my hand.

Would my 9" band saw handle the stuff with a carbide blade?

Ah yes, to be clear, I'm using the g10 as an Ibeam in that riser, it's dark macassar ebony on the outside there. And halfseminole, I'm guessing you'd be fine so long as your blade was thin enough for that tight of a curve.  Might not go as well as on a bigger one, but definitely possible.

Anyone know where to get a one-piece block large enough for a 16" recurve riser, please?  Tx.

Kevin

That's a beauty of a bow, bornofmud! Great job! I've been thinking of trying some G10 myself.

Bornofmud that is one cool looking bow, really like the riser design. Alpha Knife Supply is a good source for G10 and Micarta as well, excellent range of color choices in a variety of thicknesses.

Thanks guys!  And yeah, I use alpha knife supply or eplastics.  eplastics is cheaper, but they only have black and an off white that is kind of yellowish.  Alpha for cool colors, eplastics for black is how I do it.
