Making bamboo arrows
« on: August 26, 2014, 02:48:00 PM »
I just got a nice supply of ~70lb  spines pre straightened and tempered bamboo shafts. After making my first few arrows I have some questions I hope someone might have answers to.

1) glue on points never seem to be a good fit, since the diameter of the shaft varies throughout the shaft. Are there better ways of putting target points on bamboo (tanged points, footing the shaft, ect...)

2) What would be the effect of sanding the nodes down flush with the rest of the shaft? Will it dangerously weaken the shaft?

Thanks in advance for any information.

You can use duplex nails as field points on bamboo arrows.  You grind the top head into a point and glue the nail inside the bamboo shaft.  Make sure to wrap the shaft behind the head to keep it from splitting.

And I sand my nodes just about flat with the shaft.
