Twisted riser fix?
« on: September 27, 2014, 05:56:00 PM »
Hi All,
Quick back story. Bought a Martin Hatfield 60# take-down but the riser is twisted to where the surfaces the limbs attach to aren't square with each other. Thus putting the limbs out of alignment bad enough that the string pops when I try to shoot it. You can see the twist when sighting along the top of the riser without the limbs on, maybe 1/8 out of square.
Now, I'm not a bower but have been a cabinet builder for a while and figure "What the heck?! Let's try to fix it." There's bound to be some overlap in the skill-sets.
The main question is if I should try and twist it back with a clamp and some weights,(allowing for spring back). Or should I attempt to remove the alignment pins and resurface the connection area on the big sander? Sorry, I don't know the term for the area of the riser that the limbs connect to.
Any advice would be Greatly appreciated!
Thanks

its been a while for me on here. I have seen limbs twisted back into place but I question doing that with a riser.

have you checked the pins and their related alignment with the individual limbs?

I would check the limb pad angles with a good square to make sure that is indeed the problem.

maybe one of the other guys will chime in shortly.

good luck at any rate

I'm not sure you can twist the riser back, it is where it wants to be now. I saw someone taped an arrow square across each limb at riser ends to check "limb pad" alignment to get a good read on it.

I'm sure its off if you can see it , and it will def make the limbs pull crooked.

If it were mine, I would take the pins and inserts out(might need some heat to break glue bond) and make the pads right. Be sure to keep the same pad angle so the tiller stays right.

If you are a cabinet man, I'm bettin you can fix her!

Good luck and let us know!!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Thanks for chiming in Gentlemen.
"Have you checked the pins and their related alignment with the individual limbs?"
Yeah, the pins and holes are fine. Even switched out different limbs as I like Martin Hatfield's so much I have 3 sets!
I also shimmed the guilty area which worked (kind of) along with heating and twisting one of the limbs. But that just made for a very inaccurate shooter. I then put the twisted limb on a straight riser which thankfully seems to have straightened it back out. (Sweet shooter again!)
I kind of figured the twist fix would be a no-go because of the tensions. Only considered it because I'm nervous about pulling the pins(Ha!)as I'm not sure what type of adhesive was used. I suppose it's time to just go for it. After all I'll still have 2 left.
"I saw someone taped an arrow square across each limb at riser ends to check "limb pad" alignment to get a good read on it."
Solid idea right there. Finally! An appropriate use for these extra arrows laying around!
Thanks again Gentlemen.
Updates as events warrant.

Well I feel kind of dumb..
Pins came right out.. no glue. Just tight.
Now I just have to get it to the shop tomorrow and have at it.
