Self Centering Vise
« on: October 03, 2014, 11:32:00 AM »
Hello All,

I'm new here and starting to gather the supplies I need/want to start my first build this winter. I'm going to build a takedown longbow and I've been doing quite a bit of research about drilling for my limb mounting hardware. I haven't read many good things about Binghams jig.

Do you think a vise similar to this would work? My thought would be to crank it down on the smallest bit I have and then bolt it down and expand it to accept the riser or limb.

I've enjoyed reading everything thats been shared on the site and the wealth of information and talent here is awesome.

I've had good luck with a self-centering jig. You can get one at Harbor Freight, but I sprung for a quality one...

I wish the Grizzly one
had more drill bushings that would fit in the large holes
I would rather fail at something above my means, than to succeed at something  beneath my means

Thanks guys, I lie the price on the one you provided as opposed to the Grizzly. I also like the idea of the different sized holes to drill thru.

Do you use these to drill your risers as well? If so, how do you level the limb pad to ensure you're drilling both sides square?

Thanks,
Tim

Yes I drill my risers with it. I made a jig/sled to cut my limb pads on the table saw. I make sure the block is square and the blade is perpendicular and go for it.
