Working on one for my nephew.
« on: December 20, 2014, 09:59:00 PM »
Well since the one I was making didn't want to be a bow. It is an Osage board bow. I made the board myself from a stave I cut in half. It had thin rings thinner then I wanted to try.

The bow is on the right, broken silk back Osage and the sister board.

Oh and I had to add some heat to get the tips to line up. Once fished it will be 59" ttt. It was 64 but a big splinter came off the end when thinning it.

Well bob so far so good.

very low brace.

But here is were the string was tracking at that brace.

Working in some temp knocks.

For those. I measured .5" from the tip and 3/16th of an inch from each side and cut with a hand saw. I then took a rattail file and made the corner round. I will get pics of that later.

That brace is a bit higher.

I do have it to a full brace now.

But here it is pulling about 30#@20".

I have it pulling 25" on the tree now and about 40lbs. I need to get it to 27 or so. Just to give my nephew room for error.

I am gluing on a bit of spalted hackberry to thicken the handle a bit. I will work a bit more tomorrow and I think I should have it tillered out.

It does have bit of hand shock but I think I will put it on the tree again and see if that right limb looks flat on the outer 3rd like the pic seems to show.

got my fingers crossed for the outcome Kelly. that tiller doesn't look too bad maybe a little stiff in the outer third as you said. Hasten slowly!

Thanks fellas.

I edit on pic I had doubles up but the string tracking at a low brace has be added. Short bows are not easy to see what is going on. At least not for me.

Ok clapped on the handle to make it a bit thicker.

So I just glued on a 4" piece on to the handle it is now about 1.5" thick. it was only about .75" and I really did not like how it felt.

Ok and the tips not finished just showing the rounding of them to keep the edge from cutting into the string.

and now it is pulling 23" with the extra handle thickness.

let me know what you see in the tiller I will get on it in about an hour.

Ok the left limb looks flat and appears to have a hinge trying to develop in it next to the handle. there is a bit of deflex there I will heat out later I think but I will work on the outer third of that one for sure.

Kelly, leave the area just off the left fade alone and get the rest of the limb bending a little more. Take 5 full length scrapes and check it again. Do this until that limb bends like the other one.
The outer 12" on the left limb looks a bit stiff also.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

Ok taking it slow pulled it to 23 shot it at 23 after about 15 total scraps on the left limb. put the scale on it after about 10 pulls on the tree and half a dozen shots. she was at 35lbs. Ok I have had it to so I pull it to 24 no issue start working it at 24 and tic and I feel the tic through the string. let it down and look no missing this one.

Well I have that ones sister so I will try and keep it closer to 64"

I will post here when I start it.

ok I have the new bow laid out. I will get it cut and trimmed down to the lines and thinned this one is only a .5". So I use ipe and hackberry lams for the handle and a an ipe power lamb on the back to make the handle stiffer so it does not pop off.

if my handle and fades are 7" should I make the power lamb longer, or just 7"?

No pics yet of what I have done. I got the third try going it is a .5" board 1" wide until 8" from the times from that mark they taper to .5". I have the handle area being glued up. Once I get it all glued up I will start tillering the bow. It will be 64" ttt. Trying for 35-45lbs at around 27". We shall see. if this one fails I will be chasing a ring I guess.
