1 Piece Recurve limb stack suggestons?
« on: January 05, 2015, 09:27:00 PM »
I am hoping that you experienced bowyers wouldn't mind helping out a newbie with my limb stacks.  I am building a bingham alternate riser 60" recurve.  I would like to build this bow with some nice veneers and clear glass obviously.  My target weight is between 60-65#@28" I was thinking of using a 2" limb in hopes of building a stable, tough, strong bow. Binghams suggests .270"-.276" for my desired weight. Any suggestions or known proven stacks in this thickness?

Truth be told?  IMHO what the stack consists of is more or less irrelevant.  What matters is separating the two pieces of glass such that the total stack is .27-.276.  The glass provides 88% of the power, the wood only 12%.

I would personally use .04 glass front and back, with 3 lams in between.  If those three lams are .08, .07, and .08 that gives you .27 total stack.  Put the 'beauty' lam on the clear glass side and use whatever else you like for the other two.

For a Bingham design I would use the stack thickness that they suggest.

I plan on my stack to be what bingham suggests, I am more looking for a "recipe" if you well of a good stack. Parallel or Tapered lam?  1 Core Lam or 2? Glass thickness?

I have built several of the Bingham one piece 1 3/4" wide recurves. I measure the total Stack thickness in the center of the stack where its the thickest. A possible recipe for a 1 3/4" 60" recurve would be...040 clear belly glass, 025 veneer, .110 taper(002/inch), riser, 040 parallel, 025 veneer, 040 clear Glass...that should be 0.280"

When I built my first bow I did not have a way to measure lamination thickness..I ordered my parts and glued up my bow. The bow came out 8-10 pounds more than I wanted. I then bought a digital caliper and now measure every piece before glue up. I always have about a dozen sets of parallels and tapers in stock for making adjustments to stack.
