just what is going on here?!
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:01:00 AM »
I have never had a bow come along so perfectly like this before, so that throws red flags for me lol! roughed it out to floor tiller, strung it up at low brace, pull it a little, looks good, pull it some more, still looks good, @ 20" im at 40# going for 47 @29 and everything still looks good. zero or imperceptable set. excersized it maybe 50 times to 20" and nothing. is this what it feels like to be a real bowyer?

and yeah i think my kids must have messed with my numbers on the tillering wall

Eric, you have a good one going there. Be careful with those fades. I don't think it looks too bad the way it is for right now. Look very closely at the unbraced profile in the fade area. With your eye, follow the line of the back of the handle out into the dip area. The left side is mostly straight, perhaps the tiniest bit of reflex there. The right side does a little dip down coming out of the handle, then comes back up creating a bit more noticeable reflex right at the dip/fade area.

These areas can be tricky because they seem like they're not flexing since they don't show the same amount of curve as the parts of the limbs that started straight. Don't be fooled... especially there because if you overdo it and it takes a little set near the dips, it projects out to a lot MORE at the tips. For this reason, the fades/dips is generally the LAST place you want to cause set... so keep an eye on it, but you can worry about finessing the flex closer into the fades after you're a little farther down the tree. You may find that just pulling it farther will cause the limb to work in towards the handle a little more anyhow. Depends. By the way, what's the front profile of this thing look like?

Thanksforlooking Jeff, its about 66" ntn, 1 3/8" for about 8" and then straight taper to half inch for the last 6 or 8".  I worked on the fades a wee bit and had it to 43@26 with a 4" brace. Then i put it on a caul and lightly toasted the belly and put in maybe an inch or 2 of reflex.  Ill try to get a picture up of where it was at.

Funny how a proper tiller and handling reduces set eh' Eric? No other mad science involved, but it does make for good conversation on forums.

Enjoy your soon to be new bow!
