flipping the tips, could use some help! added pics

Got a 66" ttt osage, thinking about flipping the tips, never done it. Could use some advice. How far from the ends and whats the best way? Form?

I traced one limb of my recurve on a 2x12. cut out the curve and drilled holes every 4" or so. the farther you clamp the tip down the curve the more "flip" you get. no science to it.

I flip the last 6 inches on a form like Kevin's.  Love how easy it is to bend osage with a heat gun.

Rings are super thin should I strap the belly when I bend it?

I made a 7" long form which I clamp the tips down after heating them till pretty warm..

I use the same form that I make recurves with.  Just hold up on the clamp pressure at the tips so the arc isn't so severe.  I'd imagine you could use a plate or pail as a template on a 4 foot 2" by 6" and get the same results.  Not a bad idea to bend it a little past what you'd like the arc to be 'cuz they usually straighten out a little while the bow is being broken in.

I don't think you'd need to use a metal strap as long as the edges of the bow are rounded and you heat the osage long enough that it bends willingly.  I use square wood shims so the clamps don't dent the belly.

I consider "flipping the tips" to be just a little bit of correction to regain some profile from a bow setting as tillering commences.  That is in contrast to adding recurves which has a different, albeit similar, purpose.

That said, the process is the same for me.  I have several forms of differing design depending on my goals.  For flipping, they are maybe 12" long and add 1-1/2" of reflex over that span.  Use a flexible ruler to get your curve.  I use a 2x6 to make the form.

This form has a notch built into it to hold the tip.  Flipping forms don't for me.  I just clamp the tip.

Pat, it has super thin rings. Just the process off tillering has made a few spots look a little stressed.
